Review for Rescued By A Rake (Rakes and Rogues #1) by Gwenan Haines

Title: Rescued By A Rake (Rakes and Rogues #1)
Author: Gwenan Haines

Description: A gothic romance set in 19th-century England.

In a desperate attempt to flee the advances of her lecherous employer, governess Lydia Taylor steals his pistol and sets off across the Yorkshire countryside. After spending two months as a virtual prisoner at Stanbury Manor she wants nothing to do with Lord Hugh Stanbury—or any other man.

When Lord Jack Sibley glimpses a ghostly figure wandering the moors his first instinct is to ignore the auburn-haired beauty. Rumored to be the devil incarnate, he has a reputation as a heartless scoundrel who murdered his brother's fiancé on the eve of her wedding. Does Jack set out to rescue the beautiful woman to placate the demons that haunt him--or is his mission merely a clever ruse to bed yet another woman?

Whether she is threatening him with a pistol or seducing him by firelight, the 23-year-old Lydia is as untamed as the moors she grew up on. Though he dare not admit it, Jack may have finally met the only woman whose passion can rival his own... but if he is certain of one thing it's that passion can be deadly.

My Thoughts: Lydia is a governess. After an unwanted advance on her was made by the despicable Lord Standburry, she escapes into the cold and rainy night with his pistol as her only source of protection. Fighting the elements of the weather she rushes blindly into the night. She thinks she is heading to town, but winds up at the moors, and right into the path of the rake lord, Jack Sibley. Fighting a few of his own ghosts Jack happens to see Lydia outside in his moors caught in the storm. When he sees Lydia he is drawn to her wanting nothing more than to protect her and her fiery temper even with a pistol pointed at him. Lydia has heard rumors about the devil Sibley but her growing feelings of attraction and love won't be stopped once she sees the true Sibley.

I really enjoyed this book. It may not be for everyone cause everything is kind of fast paced in this short novella. I had never heard of Gwenan Haines before this review was requested, but I can tell you I am happy I know her work now. For a short read, it is captivating and it had a bit of excitement along with the romance; not to mention the passion between the characters. Though it was spicy and the sex scenes were hot, it wasn't overboard. I wish it was longer not because it needed to be, but cause I didn't want it to end, and it would have built the intrigue and our feelings for the characters more. Lydia is feisty and knows how to take care of herself, but underneath it all there lays a slight hint of vulnerability. She is also a woman who knows what she wants and isn't afraid to take it. Jack is your handsome yet addictive leading man who is tortured by the pass demons and lets people think of him as "the Devil" when he is caring and tender and passionate. I believe Haines is a talented author that i will enjoy reading more of her work. I will be looking out for the next book in the Rakes and Rogues series.
